Mastering Shooting Part I: Power Mechanics & Slap Shot Foundation

Build real shot power from the ground up

Develop power, consistency, and proper mechanics

If your shot has no power… this is why.

This hockey shooting training program is designed to build real shot power by developing proper mechanics from the ground up. Instead of relying on your hands alone, you’ll learn how to generate force through your legs, hips, and core—creating a stronger, more consistent shot.

We start with the slap shot because it forces proper mechanics—building power from the ground up.

  • You’re shooting… but not generating real power

  • You rely on your hands instead of your body

  • Your shot feels inconsistent

This is where real shooting development begins.

This course fixes that

What This Program Fixes

  • Weak shot power

  • Poor weight transfer

  • Inconsistent puck contact

  • Over-reliance on upper body

  • Shots that lack speed and control

Meet Your Shooting Coach: Ian Smith

I’m Ian Smith, and I’m excited to share a bit about my hockey journey. I started playing hockey at six years old and went on to captain Middlebury College’s back-to-back Division III national championship teams, earning National Player of the Year in 1996. After college, I played professionally in Germany, the ECHL with the Calgary Flames affiliate, and briefly in the IHL before transitioning to a teaching and coaching career.

I’ve spent over 13 years as a high school physics teacher and varsity hockey coach, developing both my teaching expertise and coaching skills. I’m a USA Hockey Level IV coach with a passion for helping players of all levels, from beginners to advanced athletes, develop practical, game-ready skills. In 2010, I founded Kellian Hockey, which offers skill development programs for players ranging from adults to college-bound youth athletes.

My greatest joy is helping players grow their skills quickly so they can love the game even more. I’m looking forward to sharing my experience and helping players take their game to the next level!

1     Getting Started

  • What to expect in the course.

Mastering the Art of Shooting: Unlock Your Full Potential Shooting is more than just firing pucks at the net—it’s about mastering the mechanics that create power, precision, and consistency. In this course, we’ll break down the key principles behind an elite shot, showing you exactly how to refine your technique for faster, harder, and more accurate releases. Watching the pros can be insightful, but truly understanding the complexities of body positioning, weight transfer, and shot execution requires a structured approach. That’s where I come in. Through detailed instruction, I’ll guide you in fine-tuning critical details in your shooting mechanics, leading to instant improvements in both power and accuracy. Most importantly, I’ll teach you my self-assessment strategy, using a simple video technique and an easy-to-follow checklist to help you pinpoint exactly what needs work. With the right adjustments and dedicated practice, you’ll be picking corners, firing off quicker shots, and turning heads on the ice.
