Mastering the Punch Turn

  • 10 Steps

About

Master two of the most effective evasive skating techniques in hockey — the Punch Turn and what I call the "Shim Sham" (a double punch turn)— and learn how to use them to create space, escape pressure, and stay one step ahead in game situations. This course breaks down each movement step-by-step, starting with foundational mechanics and building toward full execution under pressure. You’ll learn not just how to perform the movements, but when and why to use them during real gameplay. The Punch Turn is developed through progressive drills that focus on edge control, stick positioning, and body coordination. From basic mechanics to advanced variations like the Double Punch and Mohawk Punch, each layer is designed to build confidence and control. The Shim Sham is introduced as a deceptive movement that complements your skating, allowing you to manipulate defenders and create time and space. You’ll learn how to combine deception with strong skating mechanics to become more unpredictable and effective with the puck. Throughout the course, you’ll apply these skills in practical scenarios — including puck work — so they translate directly to game performance. What You’ll Learn -How to execute the Punch Turn with control and efficiency -Proper stick placement and body positioning -Variations including Double Punch and Mohawk Punch -How to use the "Shim Sham" to create deception and space -When to apply each movement in real game situations -How to combine skating and puck control under pressure Who This Is For Players looking to improve edge control, develop evasive skating skills, and become more confident and effective in tight situations.
