Kelly Lilly started playing ice hockey at the ripe old age of 14 at Westminster School in Connecticut. Girls ice hockey was new to the scene and Kelly was game to try it out. Taking to it instantly, she played for 4 years but then went off to Santa Barbara, CA for college. It would be a few years before hitting the ice again, but she managed to play on and off for the next 5 years until she landed in Stowe, VT and met up with the guys and gals playing recreationally at Jackson Arena.
Kelly's hockey career took off again with the late night (drinking) league and the Hyde Cup. It was in a similar tournament that a few of the ladies said "Who's that cute ref? Maybe he'd like to coach us if we put a women's team together!" And that is where Ian Smith comes in. His women's hockey coaching debut had begun. From the early unorganized stages of the Motley Crew in Morrisville, to the addition of the Wrecking Crew, to the current Evolution team, Ian has guided Kelly and her teammates since the early 2000's.
Under Ian's tutelage, Kelly has gone from "the only girl on the team who could skate backwards (high school) to a solid defenseman willing and able to play forward, happy to help guide her team and always eager to learn the next move. With Ian always in her ear at every game and practice, Kelly has learned from one of the best. His coaching style has showed her not only how to play, but WHY to play that way. That is one of the key components of Ian's coaching.
Kelly and Ian got together a few years back and looked to take things to the next level. Evolution had been growing successfully and had been so well received that they decided to offer the same type of coaching to a co-Ed group of adults. Kellian Hockey was formed on the back deck over a few beers and once word got out that there was a place for adults to continue learning how and WHY to play a good game of hockey, there was no turning back.
